Medical Humanities Initiative welcomed Dr. Lisa Wong, a pediatrician, musician, and co-founder of the Arts and Humanities Initiative at Harvard Medical School. The discussion seminar was titled “Healing the Community: A Bifocal View of the Arts in Health.”

Dr. Wong shared insights from her decades of work at the intersection of medicine, music, and community healing. Drawing from her experiences as a performer and clinician, she spoke about how the arts foster empathy, resilience, and connection within healthcare settings. Her talk invited participants to look at medicine “through a bifocal lens,” balancing scientific precision with artistic imagination.

Students and faculty reflected on how integrating creativity into medical training can deepen understanding of the human experience of illness and recovery. The evening concluded with an engaging Q&A, leaving attendees inspired to explore how artistic practice can shape compassionate clinical care.
